Lost your passport overseas? Keep calm and do these 3 things.

It’s the thing that most travellers fear more than anything else. Whether by your own doing or as a victim of theft, you find yourself in the middle of your overseas holiday minus your passport.

In 2018 over 43000 Australian passports are expected to be reported as lost or stolen. Wow! Yet most of us wouldn’t know the first thing to do if it happened. So listen up jet-setter. Here’s what to do if yours is one of them.

Advise an Australian Diplomatic or Consular Mission

By law, you must report the loss or theft of your passport as soon as possible. In doing so, you will also help to prevent criminal misuse of your passport and protect your identity.

Find your closest office HERE or visit:

Report the Incident to the Police

If your passport was stolen, report the incident to the police. Be sure to obtain a copy of the police report.

Apply for a Replacement Passport

After you have advised the Australian Diplomatic or Consular Mission of the loss or theft, they will be able to advise you on the steps you need to take to acquire a replacement passport for continued travel or to return home.

Download the Template

  • Add the consulates relating to your destinations

  • Print a copy for your travel wallet

Download the PDF of the steps, add the appropriate consulate/s details and keep a copy in your travel documents. If you run into trouble and you’re without an internet connection, securing a replacement passport will be as simple as 1, 2, 3!
